Disability Awareness Program

We have started a project to raise awareness of disability in both the community and the teaching and medical professions. Meetings are being held in villages and townships and the local people are enticed to attend with the promise of tea and cake. They are then given a talk on general health and child care, birth control, HIV and sexually transmitted diseases, and most importantly to try and break down the taboo that disability is a curse, to make the people aware that we offer help for their disabled children to try and improve status and well-being of those with disability.

We also are arranging seminars for education, medical and social work professionals to teach them how to recognise forms of disability and bring them in to our attempt to improve the care and inclusion of disabled children.

The Starfish Centre for Disabled Children was opened in 2010. Currently, there are about 100 children registered. Every day classes are held for children with various physical and mental disabilities such as Down’s syndrome and autism. The children are taught by 7 trained special needs teachers. The number of children attending is growing constantly with referrals coming from hospitals, schools, community centres and the Department Of Social Welfare. We sent one of our teachers for a years specialist training at the Mary Chapman School for deaf children and we now have three deaf students.

Physio room at Starfish 2

We are in the process of extending our community care for disabled children in many areas. Our physiotherapists travel to remote villages in various parts of the country to find and treat children with cerebral palsy. At the same time they assess which children would benefit the most from a residential stay of up to 10 weeks at the Starfish centre with their parents. Each child is taken to a specialist for medical assessment and surgery if required. The child is then given daily physiotherapy sessions and the parents are shown how to exercise and care for their child. This has brought about what can only be described as phenomenal improvements to children’s conditions after just a few months. While visiting these areas the physiotherapists also find children with serious medical conditions and deformities who in many cases have never been seen by a doctor and arrange surgery.
